Missionary: Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s Latest Collaboration
Missionary, the highly anticipated collaborative album between Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre, has been released, marking the 30th anniversary of Snoop’s groundbreaking debut album Doggystyle. First revealed by Snoop Dogg during an appearance on Stephen A. Smith’s podcast Know Mercy in late 2022, the album represents a significant reunion between the two hip-hop legends.
The album’s title serves as a playful callback to Snoop’s debut, with the rapper explaining the choice by stating, “The first album was Doggystyle.” According to veteran rapper The D.O.C., who heard early versions of the project, the album achieves “the perfect balance between the old and new Death Row,” capturing the essence of what Snoop’s next Death Row Records album might have sounded like.
During the album’s development, Snoop provided insights into the recording process, describing it as “masterful” and highlighting Dr. Dre’s production approach. “When you hear what we have and how he got me rapping, it’s like a grown Snoop Dogg,” he explained, noting how Dre uses his voice “like an instrument” and challenges him as an artist.
The project features an impressive roster of collaborators, including hip-hop producer Erick Sermon, who contributed what he called a “crazy” song, and appearances from 50 Cent and Method Man. In an unexpected crossover, both Sting and country artist Jelly Roll are featured on the record, with Snoop expressing particular enthusiasm about his collaboration with Sting.
The album’s promotion included innovative approaches in gaming, with Epic Games hosting Remix: The Finale as part of Fortnite: Battle Royale‘s Chapter 2 Remix conclusion, where Snoop Dogg performed “Another Part of Me.” The promotional campaign culminated with Snoop’s performance of “Thank You” at The Game Awards 2024, where he appeared alongside his son Cordell Broadus to present the Best Ongoing Game award.
The release of Missionary represents the culmination of nearly two years of anticipation and marks another milestone in the long-standing creative partnership between Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
